Purpose of the Role
The Registered General Nurse (RGN) within the Therapeutic Apheresis Service (TAS) will work as part of a specialist multidisciplinary team delivering therapeutic apheresis services across major hospitals in Cork. The service is consultant-led and supported by Specialist Medical Officers and RGNs.
The role involves providing Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE) and Red Cell Exchange (RCE) treatments to patients requiring specialised care.
Due to the critical and time-sensitive nature of the service, flexibility is required, including participation in on-call duties and provision of care outside standard business hours.
The RGN is expected to practice at all times in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice, as well as organisational quality standards and policies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinating patient pre-assessments.
- Managing patient care before, during, and after therapeutic procedures.
- Recognising and managing adverse events associated with treatment procedures.
- Maintaining timely, accurate documentation and reporting, including incidents and complaints.
- Coordinating service delivery, including communication with relevant stakeholders and management of stock and equipment.
- Supporting the training and induction of new staff members, including completion of associated documentation.
- Participating in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and research activities.
- Undertaking additional duties that support the Therapeutic Apheresis Service, as assigned by the Consultant in Charge and within nursing scope of practice.
Person Specification / Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria
- Registered with NMBI (live register) in the General Division.
- Minimum of 2 years post-registration nursing experience.
- Evidence of recent continuous professional development (CPD) within the last 12 months.
- Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and experience using electronic Patient Management and Learning Management Systems.
- Full driving licence and access to own vehicle.
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate qualification and/or clinical experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Renal
- Haematology
- Critical Care
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Previous experience working within a Therapeutic Apheresis or Apheresis Service.
