Job Title: Staff Nurse – Intellectual Disabilities
Location: County Wicklow
Service: Adult & Children’s Disability Residential Service
Hours: 7 x 12-hour shifts over a 14-day period

Purpose of the Role

The purpose of this role is to deliver high-quality care and support through a person-centred approach that addresses the practical, physical, and emotional needs of individuals with Intellectual Disability, Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), and/or Autism.

Reporting to the Unit Manager or a designated person, the Staff Nurse will carry out their duties while ensuring the privacy, dignity, and respect of each resident at all times.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support service users to identify and work towards personal goals using a person-centred approach.

  • Assist service users, where appropriate, to pursue FETAC or other relevant qualifications based on their abilities and skills assessment.

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members, day services staff, families, and other key stakeholders to support service users in achieving goals outlined in their individual care plans.

  • Carry out regular and systematic assessments using appropriate assessment tools and models.

  • Monitor the ongoing health and wellbeing of service users and respond to medical concerns by reporting to the Unit Manager, liaising with GPs, or accompanying service users to medical appointments as required.

  • Administer medication in line with An Bord Altranais guidelines and organisational policies and procedures.

  • Support service users to manage their own medication in accordance with current best practice.

  • Take responsibility for all clinical procedures within the scope of nursing practice.


Role Requirements

  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, in the Intellectual Disability or Mental Health Division of the Live Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord Altranais (INMB).

  • Experience working in a residential, respite, or day service setting with individuals with intellectual disabilities.

  • Knowledge and experience of Person-Centred Planning.

  • Understanding of relevant clinical and human resource policies, procedures, and applicable legislation.

  • Knowledge of National Disability Standards (HIQA).
