About Optometry Ireland
Optometry Ireland (OI) is the professional representative body for over 800 optometrists working across community, clinical and specialist settings throughout Ireland.
OI exists to serve, support and strengthen the profession. We advocate for fair recognition, appropriate resourcing and sustainable development of optometry within Ireland’s evolving healthcare system. Our vision is to be the trusted, authoritative voice of optometry and a positive force in shaping equitable primary eye care.
Key Responsibilities
Member Advocacy & Representation
- Act as the principal spokesperson and representative of OI
- Lead engagement with Government, the HSE, regulators and key stakeholders
- Advance policy positions that reflect members’ needs and professional standards
- Promote recognition of optometry as an essential pillar of primary healthcare
- Build alliances across the wider health and professional landscape
Member Engagement & Communication
- Foster open, transparent and responsive communication with members
- Ensure member queries and concerns are addressed professionally and promptly
- Support committees and working groups in advancing member priorities
- Create meaningful opportunities for member participation and input
- Maintain strong, trusted relationships across the membership
Strategic & Organisational Leadership
- Lead the development and delivery of OI’s strategic plan
- Align organisational priorities with the evolving needs of members
- Support Council in fulfilling its governance responsibilities
- Provide thoughtful, data-informed advice to assist decision-making
- Ensure continuity and stability through leadership transitions
Governance, Integrity & Sustainability
- Uphold best practice in governance and compliance
- Ensure financial stewardship and long-term sustainability
- Manage organisational risk responsibly
- Maintain clear, transparent processes and reporting structures
- Lead and support the administrative team with clarity and accountability
- Act as the Data Protection Officer
Experience required:
- Senior leadership experience with responsibility for strategy, governance and financial oversight
- An honours degree (NFQ Level 8 or equivalent)
- Experience developing and implementing strategic plans
- Proven ability to represent organisational interests externally
- Experience drafting policy, submissions or advocacy documents
- Experience working collaboratively with a Board or Council structure
