Anaesthetic Theatre Nurse

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Anaesthetic Theatre Nurse to join a busy and supportive perioperative team. This role involves delivering high-quality nursing care to both adult and paediatric patients throughout the anaesthetic phase of the surgical journey.

Working closely with anaesthetists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary colleagues, the successful candidate will provide safe, evidence-based care while promoting patient comfort, dignity, and positive clinical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care to adult and paediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Assist the anaesthetist during the preparation, induction, maintenance, and emergence phases of anaesthesia.
  • Prepare, check, and maintain anaesthetic equipment, medications, and supplies in accordance with clinical standards and best practice.
  • Monitor patients throughout the perioperative period, identifying and responding promptly to any changes in clinical condition.
  • Apply the Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) where appropriate and escalate concerns in line with clinical protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with professional standards.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, aseptic practice, and patient safety guidelines at all times.

Patient Care

  • Deliver compassionate, patient-centred care while promoting dignity, privacy, and safety.
  • Provide reassurance, education, and emotional support to patients and their families throughout the perioperative journey.
  • Demonstrate a sensitive and supportive approach when caring for children and responding to their developmental and emotional needs.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with anaesthetists, surgeons, theatre nurses, recovery staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in theatre briefings, handovers, safety checklists, and post-operative debriefings.
  • Contribute to effective communication to ensure continuity of patient care throughout the surgical pathway.

Quality & Professional Practice

  • Maintain professional nursing standards in line with NMBI requirements and organisational policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and patient safety programmes.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and clinical risks promptly through established reporting systems.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and review of perioperative policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.

Professional Development

  • Engage in continuous professional development to maintain and enhance specialist perioperative knowledge and skills.
  • Attend mandatory education programmes, competency assessments, and in-service training.
  • Support the orientation, education, and development of student nurses and newly appointed colleagues.
  • Maintain an up-to-date professional development portfolio.

Health & Safety

  • Promote a safe environment for patients, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention, waste management, and health and safety policies.
  • Report equipment faults, hazards, and safety concerns promptly.

Essential Requirements

Qualifications & Registration

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or eligibility for registration.
  • Minimum of three years' post-registration nursing experience, including at least one year in anaesthetic nursing or a related perioperative specialty.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence and ability to work independently within the perioperative environment.
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Ability to maintain annual professional registration.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is essential.
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification are desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of perioperative anaesthetic nursing, airway management, and patient assessment.
  • Experience using electronic clinical documentation and healthcare information systems.
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous learning.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Anaesthetic Nursing or Paediatric Nursing is desirable, or a willingness to undertake further specialist education.
