GEM Plastics Case Study

Gem Plastics is an industrial blow moulding company, based in Cavan, with a wide customer base in the food and drinks, pharma, medical, and agri care sections. Historically all recruitment and hiring was managed by each department head.

The Challenge

In 2012, production was moved from a 24/5 to 24/7 schedule and new staff were required to support this business growth.

With the majority of these new roles allocated to a weekend working pattern, a new approach to recruitment and sourcing of staff was required.

In addition to this, the Operations department had the biggest staff turnover, primarily due to a number of other established manufacturing companies in the area all competing for similar talent. Gem Plastics also faced a skills shortage geographically, and with no public transport to the factory it meant a reduced labour pool was available.

With a high volume of recruitment required, the business was seeking support to reduce cost and time involved in hiring and for specialised and innovative recruitment support.

Goals to be achieved

With a strong track record of hiring production operatives into the manufacturing sector in Ireland, FRS Recruitment was engaged by Gem Plastics to manage the recruitment of their new staff for the 24/7 roster.

After the initial success of this, the partnership was extended, with FRS supporting all operational recruitment and providing a constant pipeline of talent for the business.

FRS Recruitment manages this process from end to end including the advertising, screening, face to face interviewing, compliance assessments and induction for all candidates.

FRS Recruitment is now also supporting recruitment across other departments in the business including quality, procurement, warehousing and engineering.

The Results

Over the duration of the relationship, FRS Recruitment has consistently processes around 12,500 hours per month for Gem temporary workers and has placed over 35 temporary workers into Permanent positions.

The FRS Recruitment service has allowed for greater flexibility and cost savings with no excess labour on site.

Savings of at least 5% have been gained on the Operational Manager’s time by no longer having to manage regular recruitment and onboarding of new staff. Advertising costs were also saved and a “simple” phone call was all that was needed for new recruits to appear two weeks later.

During this period staff turnover also decreased from 40% to 15%, as a result of improved hiring and economic stability.

The knock-on effect was increased production (less downtime due to lack of labour) and potential “longer term” candidates could be monitored closely during their FRS Recruitment trial, so as to ensure a “better fit” on the Gem team.

Overall, the experience and partnership between Gem and FRS Recruitment has been one of respect, shared purpose and benefits that made both companies stronger over the many years they have worked together.
