Crafting the perfect Medical CV

Mastering Your Medical Professional CV

Your CV is more than a summary of your job history; it's a personal advertisement, a ticket to your next career opportunity. A CV gives you the chance to outline your skills, experience and qualifications and shows off your personality as well.

Here's how to make it count:

Medical Professional CVs Differ in Many Ways to a ‘Standard CV'

Healthcare CVs not only provide information regarding education, qualifications, and previous employment but can also be used as a vetting tool to obtain relevant police clearances, references and verifying CPD and qualifications. For this reason, don’t feel the pressure to confine it to 2 pages. Accuracy and a complete timeline are more important than brevity. This is your opportunity to shine and show your skills to us and the clients we send it to!

Tailoring Your CV

Be prepared to customise your CV depending on which role you're applying to. The best practice is to have a high level up to date CV on file with all previous employment, education and qualifications. However, you will need to highlight and elaborate further about certain courses and experience when applying to specific roles to showcase your niche skillset relevant to the role and what makes you an ideal candidate. At FRS, we are happy to keep more than one cv on file for you for consideration for different types of roles.

Content- The heart of your CV

It's vital to include relevant work experiences, academic qualifications, and key achievements. Ensure to include your medical licensure with expiry dates. A profile/ career intentions can also be included to show ambition and direction. However, every piece of information should add value and be tailored to the job you're applying for. When adding referees to your CV, ensure you’ve received permission to include their personal details.

Chronology is Key

Ensure your education and previous employment is listed in chronological order using both months and years as dates. As mentioned previously, your CV is used as a vetting tool and when it reads chronologically it helps highlight if there are any gaps in your CV. These gaps should be addressed- for example if you were travelling abroad for a period of time- state this as it will emphasise the need for international police clearance.

The Power of Words

Your choice of words can make or break your CV. Clear, concise, and error-free language creates a professional image. Use action verbs and quantifiable achievements to create impact.

Professional Layout

The visual appeal of your CV matters. A clean, professional layout with well-organised sections makes it easy for employers to find the information they need.

Effective Formatting

Use bullet points for clarity. A unique but professional font colour for headings can help your CV stand out without being overbearing.

Don't assume people will know

Describe your current and previous organisations/employers especially if it not an employer that would be well known. E.g. BestCare Hospital – 1000 bedded level 4 multi specialty trauma centre – accredited university teaching hospital.

The Complete Package

Your CV is part of a bigger picture. Ensure it aligns with your online professional profiles and is complemented by a strong cover letter.

Review and Feedback

Before finalising your CV, get feedback from mentors or professionals in the field. Their insights can be invaluable.

Continuous Improvement

Treat your CV as a living document. Update it regularly with new skills, experiences, achievements, and courses. When adding courses, ensure to include expiry dates of certification.

This guide aims to empower you to create a CV that not only showcases your skills and experiences but does so in a way that captures the attention of recruiters and hiring managers.

A well-crafted CV is a critical step in opening doors to new career opportunities.
