I am seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Health and Safety Officer to join my client, a successful main contractor in Galway. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all on-site activities comply with current health and safety regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. This role is vital in promoting a culture of safety and ensuring the well-being of all site personnel and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with statutory obligations and internal procedures.

  • Identify potential hazards and implement risk mitigation strategies.

  • Prepare, review, and update Health & Safety documentation, including risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), and safety plans.

  • Lead incident investigations, prepare reports, and recommend corrective/preventive actions.

  • Deliver health and safety inductions and training to staff, subcontractors, and visitors.

  • Liaise with site management, contractors, and relevant regulatory bodies (e.g., HSA).

  • Maintain and monitor records of safety statistics and ensure accurate reporting.

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety practices.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related qualification (e.g., IOSH/NEBOSH).

  • 2+ years’ experience in a similar role within the construction industry.

  • Thorough knowledge of Irish health and safety legislation.

  • Strong communication, report-writing, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities across active sites.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and health & safety reporting systems.

Desirable:

  • Membership of a recognized professional body (e.g., IOSH, CIF).

  • Experience in civil engineering or large-scale commercial construction projects.
