Overall Purpose of the Job

The Clinical Coordinator, Paediatric Ambulatory Care, is responsible for delivering exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, compassion, and caring are central to everything we do.

The post holder will oversee the smooth daily operation of the Paediatric Ambulatory Care Service, ensuring safe, efficient, and family-centred care.


Key Responsibilities & Deliverables

  • Demonstrate excellent communication and clinical judgement to support referrals from General Practitioners (GPs) and multidisciplinary team members to the Paediatric Ambulatory Service.

  • Develop competence in the assessment and triage of children for consultant review by appointment.

  • Support GPs in the triage process to ensure appropriate referrals.

  • Coordinate and direct daily patient and family care activities within the service.

  • Analyse workloads and staffing requirements to meet patient care needs.

  • Maintain effective communication with the Paediatric Manager regarding weekly activities, unit needs, and incidents.

  • Act as a resource for staff, families, and patients attending the service.

  • Contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care as required.


Clinical Responsibilities

  • Adhere to professional guidance as outlined by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI, 2015, 2014, 2000).

  • Undertake nursing assessment/triage of children prior to consultant review, including physical assessment (weight, height, head circumference, vital signs, urinalysis, and other investigations as required).

  • Participate in Total Quality Management processes including:

    • Identification and development of policies and guidelines.

    • Evaluation of current practices against best practice standards.

    • Supporting quality audits, KPIs, and accreditation processes.

    • Contributing to satisfaction surveys and follow-up calls.

    • Supporting health promotion initiatives (e.g., asthma care, auto-injector use).


Managerial Responsibilities

  • Manage direct enquiries from GPs regarding children requiring appointments.

  • Ensure the safety of children attending the service, including safe transfers between departments under parental supervision.

  • Develop policies and procedures as the service evolves.

  • Ensure timely escalation of issues to the Paediatric Manager.

  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies and guidelines.

  • Ensure accurate documentation, effective complaints management, and oversight of risk processes.

  • Manage fiscal resources effectively.

  • Participate in service-related organisational meetings.

  • Ensure appropriate follow-up care is arranged and communicated to parents/guardians.

  • Oversee scheduling of clinic hours and daily allocation of nursing staff.

  • Liaise with GPs, Consultants, administration, and families regarding all aspects of care.


Personal & Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain competence in paediatric assessment/triage.

  • Attend mandatory training and maintain a professional portfolio.

  • Positively represent the nursing profession.

  • Identify and support nursing research opportunities.

  • Provide education to children and families.

  • Act as a preceptor/supervisor to students and new staff.

  • Participate in performance reviews with the Nurse Manager.


Educational Responsibilities

  • Develop teaching skills and participate in the orientation, clinical teaching, and assessment of student nurses.

  • Contribute to training needs assessments and learning opportunities within the clinical area.

  • Support the induction of new nursing and support staff.

  • Develop leadership skills and act as a role model.

  • Maintain competence in mandatory training (BLS, PALS).

  • Participate in hospital grand rounds and child protection training.


Other Duties

  • Manage time effectively and comply with attendance guidelines.

  • Attend staff meetings, in-service training, and maintain professional standards of dress and conduct.

  • Wear identification badge at all times.


Interrelationships

  • Maintain effective working relationships with Consultants, GPs, families, and other hospital departments.

  • Communicate sensitively with children and parents, particularly regarding follow-up and results.

  • Collaborate with diagnostic services (radiology, phlebotomy, pulmonary function testing, allergy testing).

  • Contribute to interdisciplinary communication, QI initiatives, and support colleagues as needed.


Person Specification

Qualifications

  • NMBI registration as a Children’s and General Nurse (in good standing).

  • Current PALS certification (or willingness to complete within 12 months).

  • Paediatric venepuncture skills desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ paediatric nursing experience (acute care preferred).

  • Demonstrated leadership, teaching ability, critical thinking, and clinical judgement.

  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).

  • Willingness to upskill in paediatric venepuncture.

  • Communication: clear, concise, and professional, with understanding of change management.

  • Organisation: evidence of strong planning, time management, and adaptability to service needs.
