Clinical Nurse Specialist (Urology)
The Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist will deliver advanced clinical expertise, emotional support, education, and care coordination for patients with urological conditions throughout the continuum of care. This role is designed to address gaps in patient education, improve multidisciplinary collaboration, strengthen early intervention strategies, and ensure services are delivered in line with best practice and national standards.
Responsibilities
1. Clinical Assessment and Patient Care

Conduct comprehensive assessments addressing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of urology patients.

Develop, implement, and regularly review individualised care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

Design and oversee patient care pathways, especially for those undergoing treatment for urological conditions.

Contribute to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of high-quality nursing care to optimise health outcomes and quality of life.

Lead or support nurse-led triage and education clinics, including virtual consultations.
2. Patient Support and Communication

Provide telephone and email support for patients and families.

Schedule follow-up calls, particularly post-diagnosis (e.g., cancer), to offer ongoing guidance.

Establish effective communication and referral pathways with consultants, GPs, practice nurses, and allied health professionals.

Uphold patient confidentiality, dignity, and respect at all times in line with hospital philosophy and professional ethics.
3. Clinical Leadership and Service Development

Act as a role model and expert practitioner in urology nursing, demonstrating high standards of care.

Collaborate with the wider clinical team to deliver cohesive, patient-centred services.

Lead or support the development of new care pathways (e.g., haematuria, urinary retention, LUTS).

Drive innovation in clinical practice while maintaining adherence to established standards.

Serve as the first point of contact for staff regarding urology-related queries.
4. Quality Improvement and Audit

Initiate and support quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits to enhance patient care.

Gather and analyse patient feedback through surveys and service audits to guide service planning.

Work with Urology Consultants to develop and update clinical protocols, ensuring alignment with best practice.

Recommend service improvements based on audit findings and clinical expertise.
5. Education, Research, and Professional Development

Promote and participate in nursing research and evidence-based practice to improve outcomes.

Identify opportunities for nursing research and support colleagues in professional development.

Deliver staff education and contribute to urology training programmes.

Attend conferences, courses, and forums to advance clinical expertise.

Pursue supervision and professional development goals, maintaining a reflective portfolio.
6. Digital Health and Information Systems

Use digital systems to support care planning, data collection, and monitoring of patient outcomes.

Ensure effective integration of patient care and administration through hospital IT systems.

Monitor and support the development of nurse-led digital services such as virtual clinics and eHealth education.
7. Compliance and Governance

Adhere to the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice for Nursing.

Follow National Council guidance on the development of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role.

Ensure compliance with hospital policies, national standards, and service-level procedures.
8. Professional Development

Knowledge and Experience

Registered on the General Division of the NMBI register.

Minimum 3–5 years post-registration experience in an acute setting.

Recognised post-registration qualification in Urology.
