Clinical Nurse Specialist / Advanced Practice Pathway – Intellectual Disability (Autism & Behaviour Support)

Permanent, Full Time – 37.5 hours per week
Location: Limerick
Salary: €70,725 – €79,872 (subject to relevant public sector pay scales)

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated Registered Nurse in Intellectual Disability (RNID) to join a specialist multidisciplinary team providing high-quality, person-centred supports to individuals with intellectual disabilities and complex needs. The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of specialist Autism and Behaviour Support services in line with national frameworks and best practice standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver evidence-based specialist nursing interventions in Autism and Behaviour Support within Intellectual Disability services.

  • Work collaboratively as part of the Positive Behaviour Support team to enhance service delivery in line with organisational strategic objectives.

  • Provide clinical leadership, assessment, intervention planning, and evaluation to promote optimal outcomes for service users.

  • Contribute to service development, staff education, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Engage in clinical supervision and continuous professional development to maintain advanced clinical competence.


Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (RNID) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or eligibility for registration.

  • Broad clinical experience relevant to Intellectual Disability, Autism, and Behaviour Support.

  • Eligible to undertake, currently undertaking, or hold a Master’s Degree (Level 9 NFQ) in Nursing or a related field relevant to Intellectual Disability: Autism/Behaviour Support.

    • The programme must include a minimum of three modular components related to advanced practice and a clinical practicum.

  • Demonstrated capacity to complete a minimum of 500 hours of supervised advanced clinical practice.

  • Be, or be willing to become within two years, a Registered Nurse Prescriber in line with a Collaborative Practice Agreement (CPA).

  • Proven ability to practice safely and effectively within scope of practice and commitment to ongoing professional development.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, teamwork, and caseload management skills.

  • Strong commitment to person-centred practice, community inclusion, and the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

  • Full driving licence and access to own transport.


Desirable Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with key national policies and frameworks including:

    • Health Act 2007 (Care and Support of Residents in Designated Centres for Persons (Children and Adults) with Disabilities) Regulations 2013

    • Shaping the Future of Intellectual Disability Nursing in Ireland (2018)

    • Sláintecare (2017)

  • Demonstrated competence at Level 2 behavioural competencies within the relevant organisational competency framework.
